Random Notes

by Lesley Slepner

March, 2001

If my e-mail is to be believed, the new format is a major hit. I have heard from a number of people who are less than active, who are happy with the changes. It is nice to hear from so many of you whom I have not had the pleasure of meeting, yet. Maybe you will feel up to attending an event coming to a venue near you. The only negative I have heard was verbal (expressed by several people at the same event) which was primarily concerned with the cost. Art Gardner tells me that printing costs were less than we have been paying at Staples even though we have not been able to come in under the budgeted amount. We will continue with the change because (a) it looks nicer than it has and (b) we will be losing less than we have been with the previous arrangement. If anyone has further input feel free to share your opinion with anyone on the ExComm. Better yet, come to an ExComm meeting and provide your ideas first hand. All members are welcomed, even encouraged to attend. It gets hard to represent the members if we don't know what you want.

As of this writing, we still had room for more people on the slate of candidates for ExComm Members-at-Large. Dave Brown, Alice Rosenthal or Steve Polsz are working hard to persuade people to run. Yes, you will have people second guess you, but you will also have the opportunity to launch projects you would like to see.

People's lives shift over time and we change our social contacts and activities based on changes in our interests. As we age, so do our children, siblings and parents. Changes in their lives often affect how much free time we have for social activity. Our health status changes as we grow older and we find ourselves paying more attention to personal maintenance. The group is only viable if new members become more active as members of long standing become less active. There's nothing like running for office to make a body feel active.

Changing the subject again (I think I tend to wander on with these columns) We are CHANGING THE MONTHLY MEETINGS! Yes, you read that correctly. Beginning on the first Sunday in May, we will be meeting at a different restaurant in a different area each month. This is designed to get closer to you at least three times a year in hopes of having more people attend at least some of the time. If you have a favorite restaurant that has a back room that could accommodate at least 50, let me know.
