Sing, Dance, and Love

As I write this, I do not know if this is the twenty-fourth of twenty four, or twenty-fourth of forty-eight. You, however, do. If this is my last column, I want to take my last opportunity to thank you for allowing me to be your Local Secretary for the past two years. I wish my successor all the luck in the world. If this is only the end of one term and the beginning of a second, I want to thank you for continuing to put your trust in my hands. I will do all I can to live up to your trust. Your Executive Committee is finishing the last bits of business so as to be able to turn the reins over to the newly elected Executive Committee. It has been a real pleasure working with each member of the Ex-Comm. I can honestly tell you, the members, that each has worked very hard to be worthy of the honor you have bestowed on us. Those leaving office, thank you for giving of your time and resources. Only through your hard work and dedication has Delaware Valley Mensa become one of the greatest chapters in the United States, ever. Last year, DVM held a wonderfully successful Regional Gathering. Those who planned "Mensans Just Want to have Fun" are putting together "Mensans Just What to Have More Fun", this year's RG to be held in October. Plan to attend this, it promises to be even better, a new and improved model. If you wish to help in any capacity, place contact Jessica Weingarten, listed in the Mast Head. The twenty something annual picnic is being planned for this August. This is a wonderful day out in the Pine Barrens and the chapter's way of saying thank you for being a member. It is free, just come with a swimming suit, hiking shoes and especially a healthy appetite. We are trying something new, the working title being "Mini-RG". This will he held in a venue in the city. The idea for this is so people will be able to walk or take public transportation to the 200 plus attractions in this world class city. Socialization and dinners will be available on location as well as the extensive night club scene that Philadelphia features. Although a Hospitality Room will be available at the hotel, it will serve more as a home base rather than the focal point of the weekend. If you wish to help in any capacity, place contact Steve Kaess, listed in the Mast Head. Check the calendar for our monthly events. It is our desire to make activities available to the membership, that which the members will want to participate in. And if there is an activity that you would like to try, by all means, schedule it yourself and see what happens. One final thought I would like to pass on to you, especially if this is my last column. I'm with a small crowd of friends at the Crab Fest just on the mainland edge of Ocean City. We are having dinner and there is a live band playing and a few people dancing. There is an elderly couple that hasn't sat down since we got here. Fast or slow, they are out on the floor. They are not good dancers, just moving to the rhythm of the music, but they are enjoying themselves. Besides, what and who else matters? He is about 5 feet 7 and she is about 5 feet four. Each is fragile looking, as though they are the sole support of a family of tapeworms. Each have the appearance that if a strong breeze blew off the bay, each would blow away with it. The spokes person for the band just announced that the couple is here celebrating their fortieth anniversary. As I watch them enjoying each other, oblivious to everyone else, I can not help but be reminded of a quote: Sing as though you are in the shower, dance as if you are alone and love as if you have never been hurt before. I hope when I am their age, I can live with as much abandon as they are demonstrating tonight. God bless you all and God speed. |
