Moving Forward In Spite of the Cold
The nineteenth in a series of twenty-four

by Peter J. Stevens

February, 2003

I am sitting with forty other people at a seminar concerning mutual funds. The speaker is saying nothing new and he is as dry as Death Valley. We are in the depth of winter and boy oh boy, it is cold outside. With my knee still recovering from last year’s surgery, I am not able to go cross-country skiing as I have in past years. So I am looking forward to spring, which will be here soon and the Earth will blossom forth with renewed life and energy.

There are several activities that are easy for new comers to participate in. There is a Dining Out on the first Friday evening. There are two movie gatherings, one on the second Friday evenings and one on a Saturday evening. There is a meeting in New Jersey, on the second Friday night, specifically for new members. Then of course, the General Membership Meeting is held on the second Sunday in the afternoon. Each of these provides a different comfort level for mingling. Only one of these meetings is specifically designed for the Mensa novice so I invite our long time standing members to attend, those who have not been active for some time, and specifically, our newest members. We are an easy group of people to get to know and we like to have fun, not to mention, eat chocolate.

One of the great joys of being the President of Delaware Valley Mensa has been presenting awards to budding scientist at the George Washington Carver Science Fair which takes place in the spring. Mike Fisher will once again represent Delaware Valley Mensa and be a judge for the fair. He is looking for additional people to help judge the entries. Anyone who would be willing to spend a few hours evaluating science projects is encouraged to contact Mike.

With spring just around the corner, it is time to be thinking of the up and coming elections for President, Treasurer and Members at Large. Anyone interested in volunteering for a board position needs to do so before the 21st. All positions are up for grabs and the more people applying, the more choices, you the voter, will have, and (more likely) the better the Executive Board will be. The deadline is approaching fast so put your name forward, now. Many thanks to Don Baldino, Nancy Rauch and Steve Kaess for making up the Nomination Committee.

Although this is the middle of winter and daylight is at its shortest, now is the time to be with your friends in Mensa. The board is making a gallant attempt to provide you, our members, activities that will draw you out of the house and get your blood circulating. See you there.
